Tuesday Quick Hits: Crowe Visits the Big House

  • Greg Mathews was replaced in the starting lineup by true freshman Toney Clemons on Saturday. This is probably the punishment stemming from his cheapshot on an Oregon player that was just out of frustration. Even though he didn't start, Mathews still ended up catching a touchdown later on in the game.
  • Other than Chad Henne, the dress list also didn't include Marques Slocum and Junior Hemingway for the Notre Dame game. This was the third consecutive week Slocum didn't dress, meaning he's either still suffering from an injury or is buried in Lloyd Carr's doghouse. My bet would be on the latter. Hemingway didn't dress because of an injury.
  • Actor Russell Crowe, who has become great friends with Lloyd Carr, made the trip to Ann Arbor for Saturday's game to support his friend during the tough times he's gone through with losses to Appalachian State and Oregon. Crowe addressed the team before the game and whatever he said worked as it led to a 38-0 victory. (I know, I know, Notre Dame being one of the worst teams led to that.) Crowe also got to run out and touch the banner with the players and even joined Lloyd Carr in his press conference after the win. He went up to the podium to answer questions as well (see below).
  • The latest rankings are out and Michigan is rightfully nowhere to be found. The Wolverines' opponent this week, Penn State, is ranked 10th in both polls.
  • Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden took a cheapshot at Lloyd Carr after beating Furman on Saturday, saying this:
Bowden was a little perturbed at the questioning of a 28-point win and spun it back at the Wolverines.

"We won. That’s not something Lloyd Carr can say," Bowden said to reporters after the game.
Maybe Bowden should win his conference or get to a BCS bowl before he says stuff like that. Just a thought.
  • Charlie Weis is showing that he's not that great of a coach with an 0-3 start, but by saying things like this, it really makes me question what he is even thinking at this point.
The Irish's best drive came late in the game, but Weis opted not to try to score the offense's first touchdown of the season.

''I could've thrown the ball to the end zone, but I think that's disrespectful to Michigan,'' he said. ''It's better to take your beating than try to get a garbage touchdown.''
Shouldn't you try to score anytime it's possible? I really don't think Michigan would have taken it personally if Notre Dame scored a "garbage touchdown," but thanks for preserving our shutout, Charlie.

Weis has completely lost his mind. I'd be surprised if he's still in South Bend in another year or two.

That 10-year extension really looks good now, doesn't it?
