Buckeye Lane hosts the Week 10 edition of the Big Ten Bloggers Roundtable.
1. With the Big Ten season about to be wrapped up, it is a little easier to predict what Bowl games are possible for your school. Tell me what Bowl games would interest you as a fan. Where do you want to go? More importantly, who do you want to play?
The bowl game that Michigan has been playing for ever since the 0-2 start is the Rose Bowl. With there being absolutely no chance to play for a national title, the Rose Bowl is the next best thing as it likely would mean the Wolverines wrapped up a Big Ten championship. From the moment the loss to Oregon occurred, that was the one thing Michigan could play for.
To be honest, I really am starting to get a little tired of the Rose Bowl. That may sound like a dumb statement, but going there 3 times in the last 4 years gets repetitive, especially since all 3 games were losses. I would much rather see Michigan play in another BCS game. However, with the circumstances surrounding this season, a Rose Bowl is the one thing I want to see most as it would mean U-M won a Big Ten title.
Aside from the Rose Bowl, if Michigan ends up losing down the stretch, then the next best bet is to play in a New Year's Day bowl, say the Capital One or Outback. Both are located in sunny Florida and are fun destinations, but playing in one of them means no Big Ten title, so obviously a Rose Bowl is where Michigan wants to be.
As far as the opponent goes, there are two guidelines that are similar for who Michigan plays in whatever bowl game they end up at: 1) No Oregon, and 2) No team with a spread offense and a mobile QB. The reason I mention Oregon separately is because a trip to the Rose Bowl could mean a rematch with the Ducks, and I don't even want to think about that. For the 2nd part, any team with a spread offense and a mobile QB would give Michigan problems, so let's just hope we're done playing those kinds of teams for good this season.
2. In honor of Black Shoe Diaries’ question about the Big Ten Moron Coach of the Year Award. Tell me who is the most disappointing player in the Big Ten this season. Also, tell me who is the most disappointing on your team.
I really don't have a great answer for this question, but just from seeing him play the last couple of years, I would have to say Penn State quarterback Anthony Morelli. He always is inconsistent where he'll be great one week and horrible the next. I guess I figured by now he would become a more consistent player, but that just doesn't seemed to have happened.
For the most disappointing player on Michigan, the answer to this would depend on when it was asked. For example, after the first two games, I would have said field goal blockers/every defensive player. After the winning streak got started, the answer would have been Jason Gingell. Now, though, it is much harder to pick someone, which is great considering it means no one has been complete crap in the last few weeks. That's always a welcoming thought as the season progresses.
3. Ohio State is rumored to be building a giant buckeye nut outside the football stadium. This will lead to the new tradition of “rubbing the nut.” I’m sure Michigan fans will use that against us. I know it is pretty late to start new traditions in the Big Ten, but pitch me a new tradition idea for your school.
Yes, actually, we will probably use that against OSU. I will admit that a tradition like that would be hilarious, but again, it's great ammo to use against the Buckeyes.
Getting to the actual question, there are two traditions I'd like to see be added at Michigan. The first is actually beating Ohio State once in a while. That way, making fun of them would actually be meaningful as anything said wouldn't be countered with scores from the last 6 years. The second tradition that has to happen is fans making noise at the Big House. To do that, all of the people that sit and don't make a peep for 60 minutes of action unless it is to tell someone to sit down would have to be removed or would have to change their ways. I have had it with the crap that fans who cheer get. If people standing at a football game is a problem, then stay home. Also, if you feel that the student section and spread out groups of other fans around the stadium will make noise for you, then again, stay home or change. I just can't take fans being quiet any longer, and a tradition of being a noisy stadium would be nice.

Sean, good commentary, but I have to disagree ... I would LOVE to have a rematch against Oregon. If we can actually make it to the Rose Bowl (I agree -- a big if -- considering a very difficult schedule over the next three games), can you think of a better way of redeeming the season than to beat the Ducks? Granted, we got thrashed in that game, but if I remember correctly we did put up over 300 yards of offense in the first half before Henne got hurt (unfortunately we didn't convert much of that into points). I think we would have at least a decent chance of beating Oregon on a neutral field. Maybe not, but you gotta believe.
If we cut down our mistakes and cash in our long drives I think we could put up a good fight vs Oregon. The defense will be better, their confidence is back it seems and that can go a long ways in my opinion since they were pretty young at the beginning too.
I think we lose by at least 10 to Oregon. Not only have we gotten better, so have the Ducks. Very balanced offense and Dixon has been out of his mind.
Great measuring stick to be sure, but probable convincing loss.
How could anyone ever be "Sick" of the Rose Bowl?
