ESPN: Miles to Michigan; Carty: Miles to Stay at LSU

UPDATE II: Angelique Chengelis is now reporting the same thing.

Les Miles will not be Michigan's next head coach, according to sources close to the situation.

Miles has signed a lucrative, multi-year extension with LSU.

"It's done," said a source close to the situation. "He's staying at LSU."
This is turning out to be a bad situation for Michigan. If Miles really did turn down the job, it is truly embarrassing for Michigan and now I don't know where Martin will go. It seemed like all Michigan's eggs were in one basket, so this could be turning out to be a disastrous situation.

UPDATE: Carty has changed the article now. Instead of saying "A release will be forthcoming within the hour," the article now says this:

Details of the extension are expected to be released by LSU, which has scheduled a 1:45 p.m. press conference prior to today's Southeastern Conference title game between the Tigers and Tennessee.
Like I said, I have no clue what's going on right now.

Well, this morning has certainly turned out to be interesting.

ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit first was told that Les Miles would be Michigan's new head coach and would bring Georgia Tech's Jon Tenuta with him to be the defensive coordinator.

A source has told ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit that barring any unforeseen circumstances, Michigan will announce early next week it has reached an agreement with LSU coach Les Miles to be its next head football coach.

Herbstreit is also reporting that Miles will make Georgia Tech defensive coordinator and interim head coach Jon Tenuta part of his staff at Michigan.
This was great news to hear for two reasons: 1) It meant Michigan will have its new coach in place pretty quickly, and 2) Michigan would get a great defensive coordinator who actually was mentioned by some as head coach material.

Just after this report came out, the Ann Arbor News' Jim Carty reported that Miles will stay at LSU, as he has just signed an extension.

Sources close to both Les Miles and the LSU administration report the coach has reached a multi-year contract extension with his current school and will remove himself from consideration as the next Michigan coach.

A release will be forthcoming within the hour.
I no longer have any idea what's going on. The only thing I will say is that the possible source for Herbstreit to report this news could be a colleague of his on College GameDay. Considering Desmond Howard is on the search committee and is on GameDay, this would make sense. It's just pure speculation on my part, but it would be a source that knows what's going on.

Stay tuned for any breaking news on the coaching search that may come out throughout the rest of the day and tomorrow. Martin is supposed to meet with Miles in the near future, so this deal could officially be done or officially could be killed in the next few days.

Either Carty or Herbstreit are going to come off looking like an idiot. And I'd prefer it be Herbstreit, not because I don't want to see Miles in the Big Ten, but because it'd be nice to that smug look wiped off of Herbstreit's face.
