Michigan picked up a pair of commitments from Pahokee High School's Vincent Smith and Brandin Hawthorne. The two Florida natives announced their decision to attend Michigan earlier today, bringing the total number of commits for the 2009 recruiting class up to 16. Smith picked the Wolverines over Wisconsin and Tennessee among others, and Hawthorne chose Michigan over Louisville.
Smith is your typical new Michigan running/slot back. He isn't very big as he is listed as only being 5'8" tall and 165 pounds. Even so, he is a speedster that brings the ability to break out for a big play as he does a nice job of avoiding tacklers. Think of him as a burner type of player that can do some great things when he gets the ball.
Hawthorne is a very athletic linebacker that can make plays thanks to his speed. He isn't exactly all that big, either, but he makes up for that by getting to the ball quickly. Rivals and Scout both give him 3 stars (the same goes for Smith), and ESPN rates him a single point better than Smith.
If freshman Martavious Odoms, who came to Michigan from Pahokee and is already starting, is any indication, then Michigan is getting two solid players. Hopefully U-M will be getting a couple more in the coming weeks as recruiting visits take place and recruits pick schools. The name to watch most is Tate Forcier, who will be at the Utah game tomorrow and is expected to make a decision soon after. Things look good for Michigan, so hopefully his most recent visit to Ann Arbor will seal the deal.
