Charlie was a frumpy looking character whom no one seemed to notice when he was present. On paper that would be true, however, college football is a strange animal that could come back to bite him. Most football coaches would take the position to be quiet until after you've beaten your opponent, or at least waited until you've shown that you've turned your team around.
